About Book Of The Month Clubs

If you purchase more than a few books each year, you can save a great deal by joining a discount book club, also called "book-of-the-month clubs" . Discount book clubs enable readers to purchase books directly from the publisher, which makes their cost considerably less than their retail price.

Countless people are getting involved in book of the month clubs.  The book of the month club has been around for many years, however recently there is renewed interest in getting together with others to discuss the book of the month.  Many people credit Oprah for this increased interest.  Oprah has been selecting a book of the month to read with a group and then shows clips of the group discussion on her television show.

It is very easy to start a book of the month club and you do not have to stick to a particular reading list or topic.  The New York Times has a list of the book of the month, but you do not have to stick to this list.  Some people feel that they do not want to get involved with a book of the month club because you need to read books that you do not have an interest in, this is not true.

Just before you start a book of the month club approach four or five people that you enjoy spending time with.  Invite them to come over to your home one evening and ask each to bring the title of two or three books that they find interesting. 

Create a comfortable sitting area in an area of your home and serve refreshments and dessert.  Then as a group develop the parameters of your book of the month club.  This does not have to be complicated, but it does assure that future gatherings do not hold any surprises for people.  Decide which day of the month and what time works best for everyone.

Make a decision how you will rotate where the book of the month club will meet.  There are many public places that provide quiet relaxing settings for a book of the month group to meet, so if someone does not want to have the meeting in their home, a public place can be chosen. 

Also decide what kind of refreshments will be served.  You so not have to list specific foods, but decide if your group wants to discuss the book of the month over dinner, breakfast, snacks or dessert.  Many books of the month clubs will center their refreshments on the book that they are reading.

Most book of the month club can be as complicated or simple as you make it.

Any time decisions are made in a group there needs to be room for compromise.  Some book of the month clubs take turns between members to decide which book will be read.  The book of the month club should be enjoyable and interesting so that it adds to your enjoyment of reading.

The great savings offered by book clubs aren't the only reason to join. Many book clubs allow you to browse through their entire catalog and make selections online. This way, you never again have to leave the comfort of your own home to purchase books. It also comes in handy if you remember the title of a book that you really want at 1am and the bookstore is closed!
