Stay Healthy During Your Travels

Planning a warm spot vacation? Dreams of sunny days, romantic jaunts on the beach, and late nights at neon dance clubs probably are part of your fantasy. But as you prepare to leave for that well earned vacation, keep these three tips in your head so that your vacation at the ocean will not turn into a costly time confined to a hotel room:

* Keep Water Handy Even short periods in the sun will dehydrate you rapidly, especially if your body is not accustomed to the weather at your location. Taking in the minimum 64 ounces of water a day is not going be sufficient to be enough to keep you hydrated. And no, that Mai Tai that you intend to sip all day will not do the trick either. You should be consuming at least 10 (half pint) glasses of water a day to replenish your body while having all that fun in the sun, and even more (twelve to fifteen) if you plan on exercising or drinking alcohol. A little dehydration may not seem like it would matter very much, but it can really zap your energy. And dehydration left unchecked can lead to painful headaches, cramps, digestive distress, and significant fatigue while severe dehydration can be deadly. Don’t let dehydration take you off the beach or make you sit out at the dance club: make sure you are drinking enough water.

* Put On Sunscreen or Sunblock You're going to resist this advice, I know. You probably would like to have a tan to model for everyone at the office once you return from your vacation. However, you can do a lot for your health and your youthful appearance, if you spend most of your time protecting yourself from the sun's damaging rays. This is especially true, the closer you are to the equator. Take along a protective lotion of SPF 30 that offers protection from UVA and UVB rays. Apply it every two hours--more often if you're sweating, swimming or just splashing in the surf. When the activities allow, put on clothes to help provide additional protection. Remember though, clothing by itself does not provide enough protection. Be aware that you must use sunscreen even during days with a light cloud cover. The health repurcussions and the potential skin damage are very real threats. Instead of the tan, simply share some photos with your envious friends at work!

* Watch What You Eat Whether you are vacationing nationally or in a different country, you should pay attention to what you are consuming. Though local street food may be cheap, authentic, and alluring, it may have more to it than you figured on. Food hawked at outside food kiosks is exposed to bacteria that could leave you rushing to the closest restroom for the rest of your tour. If you are vacationing abroad, it is strongly suggested that you avoid salad and unpeeled or uncooked fruits and vegetables, as the very water that these uncooked items are washed with may have bacteria your body is not prepared for. Here are some rules of thumb that may seem obvious but are often neglected: make sure hot food comes heated throughout; peel all raw fruits and vegetables; and drink only bottled waterMake certain that it's not a previously used bottle that has simply been refilled with local water.

As you leave on your travels, keep these important tips in mind. Remember to be safe, responsible, and to use your best judgment as you travel. You can leave your work and worries at home, but remember to pack your common sense.
