I lately went with both of my shih tzus for their distemper/parvo shot. George, is just over 2 and a healthy 17 pounds. Eve, just under 2, had finally reached a good weight of 17 pounds. The two of them are happiest when they are meeting their friendly vet down the road, I think it is an attention thing. George saw the veteran at the beginning then Eve.
She came back out and was fine At this point, Eve began to vomit until all ingredients were out of her stomach. Our shih tzu was so ill she couldnt move not even an inch. We lookes there to see if she would arise and be fine. Things didnt improve at all with poor Eve tilting all over the place, it was almost as if someone had injected her with a anaesthetic dart she was in so much discomfort.
Our vet John was very quick off the market and got some steroids into our shitzu as fast as he could. We held back to see if this would counter act the vaccine. Her breathing became very difficult, and she looked even less reactive. John then advised us that we get her to the specialist dog hospital in our area so they could give her 24/7 aid. That afternoon and night was doubtful.
The hospital put her on a drip that night. I dont think the lovely people in the clinic thought our shih tzu dog would do well but we were optimistic that it would all turn out for the best. Tender loving care as well as the hospital drugs were her stable diet for 4 days whilst there. This reply to the injection caused her to go into shock, along with swelling and hemorrhage in her stomach and intestines. But, my little girl came through this, incredibly. She is recuperating at home.
She drinks her water and likes to sleep more than before but I can only believe this is because the whole incident was so harrowing for her. I think she will come to a full recovery with time. It has been a steep learning curve these last few months.
I have learned that the shih tsu breed are the no 1 to react to them. And I will be working to get "full disclosure" for people that take their pets to get vaccinated. It really cost us a lot of bucks we could ill afford to spend however we would do anything for our dog.Others should not have to go through this.
