Brand New College Grant Information for 2006-2007

President Bush approved funding for two brand new college grants called the National Smart Grant and Academic Competitiveness Grant. Over $700 million dollars has been budgeted just for these grants. The whole idea behind the new college grants is to encourage students to work towards a major in the technology, math, and science fields. Both of the grants have gone into effect for this school year. Each of the grants has their own requirements to become eligible. The following items are a description of the primary eligibility requirements. Students should keep in mind that it may be necessary for them to meet other prerequisites to receive grant money.

The Academic Competitiveness Grant is given to freshman and sophomore college students. Freshman students can collect up to $750 toward their tuition fees and second year students could be awarded up to $1300. Below you'll find the requirements for the Academic Competitiveness Grant.

Students may receive the Academic Competitiveness Grant if:

They're enrolled full-time as either a freshman or sophomore college student in a two or four year degree program.

They're eligible to receive the Pell Grant. (Students who are given the Academic Competitiveness Grant may also apply the Pell Grant to help with their college tuition.).

They've finished a strenuous high school plan of study as defined by national education requirements and standards.

They earned a 3.0 grade point average during the first year of college. (For second year students)

        They are an American citizen.

They completed senior high following January 1, 2006 for first year students and January 1, 2005 for second year students.

The National Smart Grant is an award given to third and fourth year students going to college. Senior and junior students can receive up to $4000. Below you will find a list of initial requirements for the National Smart Grant.

Students could receive the National Smart Grant if:

They're enrolled as a full time third or forth year student in a four-year undergraduate program.

They qualify to receive a Pell Grant. (Students who receive the National Smart Grant may also apply the Pell Grant to college tuition.).

They are a United States citizen.

        They earned a 3.0 GPA.

They are planning to graduate in in mathematics, technology, engineering, science, or a foreign language.

For college students who are not eligible for the Academic Competitiveness Grant or the National Smart Grant, there are various other college government grants available. Requirements are based upon the student grant. Students could receive a college grant depending on academic performance, athletic talent, or financial need. Other students can receive a grant based on their religious background, major, or ethnic background. These are a few valuable pointers that will help you increase your chances of receiving money for college:

  • Inquire about numerous government grant programs to find a college grant you are eligible for.
  • Turn in applications for a variety of grants.
  • Begin the application at the beginning of the year.
  • Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Maintain a solid 3.0 grade point average.
  • Remain positive.

We encourage students attending high school to start planning for college as early as possible. A number of eligibility requirements for college grants are judged on high school grade point, courses taken, and extracurricular activities (including sports). Those who plan ahead are most likely to collect one or more grants for college.
